If you want to fully enjoy Asiago Plateau, you must spend at least one day in a “malga”, a traditional house in the mountains among rich pastures for cattle, where you can have a chat and a glass of wine with the farmer, a piece of an excellent cheese and try other local products of exceptional quality.
During the Venetian period, Asiago Plateau began already to replace sheep with cows and thus the production of milk and of the famous Asiago cheese started to flourish in the region.
The pastures in the high mountains are only used in summer for pasture of cattle. The “malghe” are a common presence in the Alps; in the Asiago Plateau there are about 87 “malghe” extending over an area of around 7,775 ha. Considering the size of territory they cover, the “malghe” represent definitely the most important environmental heritage you can find in the Italian Alps.
