The artist Toni Zarpellon had the idea of “rehabilitate” the quarries after the art exhibition he held in 1988 in the “Garage of Church Street” in Rubbio.
Soon after this event, the artist decided to artistically transform the environment of the quarry, degraded and abandoned by people after a careless use.
His challenge was to colour the big rocks of grey stone present in the quarry creating in this way a world of anthropomorphic images and animal shapes.
In winter 1989, Toni Zarpellon began the restoration of the first of three quarries, called the "Painted quarry”.
Not far from the “Painted quarry”, there is the “Inhabitedquarry”: performed in 1991, this quarry presents 150 car tanks of various shapes and sizes that Zarpellon modelled giving them human and animalforms.
The third and the last quarry is called “Laboratory” and represents an open space for imagination and experiments, where every work is left to visitors’ interpretation.
